Plenty of high-profile celebrities have professed their love for the Grateful Dead throughout the years, but until his death in May 2024 at the age of 71, there was perhaps no Deadhead as visible as Bill Walton—both in the figurative and literal sense. A longtime fan, the NBA Hall of Famer developed a friendship with the band and was frequently spotted at shows, from Fare The Well to Dead & Company tour—at almost 7 feet tall, he’s pretty hard to miss in a crowd.

Walton made some amusing cameos on the stage as well. In addition to appearing as part of Dead & Company’s 2015 New Year’s Eve shenanigans in Los Angeles as a Jedi Father Time, the NBA star helped close out Dead & Co’s 2016 summer tour by joining drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann and bassist Oteil Burbridge for their nightly “Drums” segment.
