Wonder, 69, revealed to the audience at his BST Hyde Park performance on Saturday that he’ll undergo the surgical procedure this September, but he made a point to let his fans know that it’s nothing to worry too much over.
“So what’s gonna happen is this, I’m going to have surgery, I’m going to have a kidney transplant in September of this year,” he said over the microphone to a crowded performance area within London’s Hyde Park. “I’m all good, I’m all good, I’m all good. I have a donor, it’s all good,” Wonder said. “I want you to know I came here to give you my love and to thank you for your love. You ain’t gotta hear no rumors about nothing, I told you what’s up. I’m good. All right?”
The Saturday night event was billed as, “The Stevie Wonder Song Party: A Celebration of Life, Love & Music with very special guest Lionel Richie.” The event also featured performances from Lianne La Havas, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Norman Jay MBE, to name a few.
The announcement comes just a few weeks following the famous singer and pianist’s live debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre back on June 24th. The announcement also follows (and maybe acts as a response to) a report shared by The Detroit Free Press last week which stated Wonder is “battling a serious but manageable health issue,” with one source stating the veteran musician is “doing better now than he was a couple of months ago.”

Earlier this year, Wonder joined some of his Motown contemporaries and colleagues in performing at the 60th-Anniversary event celebrating Detroit’s groundbreaking record label in Los Angeles during Grammy week.
