Twiddle ended 2019 with a two-night New Year’s Run in Boston. On Monday, the band played a fan picked setlist at the Paradise Rock Club before their New Year’s Eve festivities on Tuesday at the House Of Blues.
The fan picked setlist on December 30 was loaded with rarities right from the start as Twiddle opened with their first “Blueberry Tumble” since March. Next up was “Dinner Fork,” an original debuted in March that was last performed on May 2. “Dinner Fork” bled into a “Beehop” featuring saxophonist Lee Ross before Twiddle ended “Blueberry Tumble.” From there, the quartet fit “River Drift” within “White Light” and recently debuted original “Just Gravy” within “Doinkinbonk!!!” to end the first set of the run.
More song sandwiches got the second set underway as Twiddle worked “Zazu’s Flight” into “Honeyburste” and “Tom’s Song” into “Polluted Beauty.” Both “Honeyburste” and “Tom’s Song” had been shelved since March. Twiddle followed “Polluted Beauty” with their second ever “Mistakes,” which gave way to “Cabbage Face.” Next, a “Hattie’s Jam” led into a set-closing “Lost In The Cold.” Lee Ross returned to add to the latter. Twiddle finished off their night at the Paradise with a fitting cover debut of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” a song that incorporates part of “Pastime Paradise” by Stevie Wonder.
Twiddle had more rarities in store for New Year’s Eve beginning with “Invisible Ink.” It had been 37 shows since the four-piece last played the song that opened their two-set show. A wild “Apples” sequence followed containing “Mamunes The Faun,” “Laughable Butane Bob” and “Every Soul.” The Vermont-based band then ended the set with a run of “Life Back Now,” “Syncopated Healing,” “Brown Chicken Brown Cow” and “Earth Mama.”
“Nicodemus Portulay” laid the groundwork for a Norco countdown into 2020 that was followed by the traditional “Auld Lang Syne.” Another recently debuted original, “Slippin In The Kichen,” came next ahead of a 14-minute “Jamflowman.” Twiddle closed out the frame with the expansive pairing of “The Box” and “Frankenfoote.” For the encore, Twiddle went with “Orlando’s.”
