Stephen Stills celebrates his 77th birthday today. A twice inducted member of the Rock And Roll Hall Fame for his contributions to 1960s folk-rockers Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash, Stills’ songwriting credits include Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and CSN’s “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” among many others.
In addition to his tenures in those groups (and CSNY, Manassas and others), Stills’ has maintained a successful solo career dating back to his 1970 debut album, Stephen Stills. Among those that contributed to that record were Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Ringo Starr, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Cass Elliot, Booker T. Jones and Cass Elliot.
Stills performed at the Havana Jam festival in early-March 1979 the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana, Cuba. Weeks later, Stills and his solo band consisting of guitarist Gerry Tolman, keyboardist Mike Finnigan, bassist George “Chocolate” Perry, drummer Joe Vitale, percussionist Joe Lala and vocalist Bonnie Bramlett held a concert at The Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey.
That night in New Jersey’s setlist included “For What It’s Worth” and “Love The One You’re With,” the latter of which first appeared on Stephen Stills and later on the CSNY live album 4 Way Street. Other Stephen Stills cuts played that night were “Cherokee” and “Go Back Home.” The set contained the title track to Stills’ 1978 solo album, Thoroughfare Gap, and its “You Can’t Dance Alone.” There was also a cover of Robert Johnson’s “Come On in My Kitchen,” songs from Manassas and “Cuba Al Fin” which was performed at Havana Jam.
