Gov’t Mule held their first performance of their Island Exodus 11 destination event in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. The band opened with a set comprised of songs with animals in their titles and were joined by several special guests including Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars and My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel, among others.
Broemel, who is on the Island Exodus 11 lineup with Tyler Ramsey, was the first guest to emerge, adding guitar to a first set cover of The Beatles “Dig A Pony.” Other animal-themed songs played in the first set included Pink Floyd’s “Pigs On The Wing (Part 2),” The Allman Brothers Band’s “Kind Of Bird,” Willie Dixon’s “Little Red Rooster,” Prince’s “When Doves Cry” and Al Green’s “I’m A Ram,” along with originals “Mule,” “Rocking Horse,” “Monkey Hill” and “Bad Little Doggie.”
In the second set, guitarist Warren Haynes brought out frequent Mule collaborator, saxophonist Ron Holloway, to augment a dub arrangement of Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” The second set also saw guitarist Luther Dickinson and percussionist Cody Dickinson, who are on the island as part of the event’s lineup, and drummer Justin Guip, who is on hand to perform with Hot Tuna, sit-in on a cover of Little Feat’s “Two Trains.” The trio of guests plus Holloway also assisted on the set-closing “32/20 Blues.” Opening night drew to a close with Mule delivering a “Traveling Tune” encore.
