Legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner has died at the age of 81. His death was confirmed in a post to his official social media account.
Born Alfred Tyner in Philadelphia on December 11, 1938, Tyner was 21-year-old when John Coltrane invited him to become a member of the John Coltrane Quartet. Tyner’s recordings with Coltrane include such classics as “My Favorite Things” and the landmark 1964 album, A Love Supreme, which also featured bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.
Tyner left Coltrane’s group in 1965. Outside of his work with Coltrane, Tyner’s credits include playing piano alongside such other legends as Art Blakey, Donald Byrd, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Stanley Clarke and many others.
An often-cited influence on other jazz pianists, Tyner also issued several solo albums, beginning with his 1962 LP, Inception, and amassed nearly 80 album credits as a bandleader, featured artist or contributing musician. During his career, Tyner was the recipient of four Grammy Awards.
