Osiris Media launched Eric Krasno Plus One, a new podcast hosted by jam scene veteran Eric Krasno. Dave Matthews Band frontman Dave Matthews served as the guest on the first episode, while Khruangbin bassist/vocalist Laura Lee appears on the second episode. Both installments can be streamed below.
Krasno spoke with both musicians after the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, so each conversation includes plenty of discussion about life at home for touring musicians. Matthews and Krasno explain the impact the “pause” has had on their personal and professional lives. Eric opened for DMB with Soulive and Lettuce a number of times and the pair recall their shared experiences. Dave spoke about the process of selecting acts to open for DMB, how he put his band together and his earliest influences towards the beginning of the episode.
Dave also spoke of his relationship with Neil Young and the respect he has for his fellow Farm Aid board member. He then discussed how he developed his own style as he aims to play guitar as keyboardists play piano. Matthews went on to explain how he “stays hungry” more than 25 years after first finding success. “I feel over-rewarded for my work,” Dave told Kraz and that makes him always want to earn the success he’s achieved over the years. Matthews also recalled playing Madison Square Garden with Karl Denson backing James Brown, recruiting Rashawn Ross from Lettuce and how this period of musicians staying at home may lead to masterpieces.
Laura Lee is featured on the second episode of Eric Krasno Plus One. The Texan musician’s discussion with Kraz starts with both talking about their current situation off the road. Lee explained Khruangbin was supposed to take a bit of time off in 2020 but then Tame Impala asked the band to open for them and the trio said yes. Krasno spoke of how he found the music of Khruangbin before Laura recalled how her band came together. Lee went on to discuss Khruangbin’s evolution, how she is inspired by Phish and a lunch date she had with Trey Anastasio that led to the guitarist’s collaboration with the trio.
Krasno asked Laura if she envisioned Khruangbin achieving the level of success they’ve hit to which Lee responded she wouldn’t have put her whole life into the project if she didn’t. Lee also discussed the fanbase that has formed around the band and specifically her appreciation of jam scene fans that support Khruangbin. Other topics hit upon were the importance of drummer DJ Johnson to the band, the three-piece’s just-finished third studio album and more.
