Gimme Shelter In Place: Jackie Greene Performs ‘Light Up Your Window’

131

Gimme Shelter In Place is JamBase’s archival video series launched for fans who right now can’t go see live music. Canceled concerts and music festivals due to social distancing and sheltering in place in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to tours around the globe. We know nothing can truly replace seeing live music in person, but we hope the Gimme Shelter In Place live videos provide a taste of those memorable experiences.

Northern California native Jackie Greene was among the participants in JamBase’s Songs Of Their Own Grateful Dead 50th anniversary video series. Recorded in 2015 in the lead up to the Fare Thee Well concerts, Greene contributed a cover “Sugaree.”

The shoot took place backstage before Greene played a show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. A storied venue in Grateful Dead history, GAMH hosted the legendary band only once, but their August 13, 1975 performance was released as One From The Vault.

Greene’s own history with the Dead runs deep, having been a member of Phil Lesh & Friends on a number of occasions, as well as forming WRG with Bob Weir and Chris Robinson, among other associations. Greene’s 2009 EP, The Grateful, was made up of covers of “New Speedway Boogie,” “Brokedown Palace” and “Sugaree.”

Members of Team JamBase were treated to more than a Dead cover that afternoon almost five years ago. Greene and his band mates, Nathan Dale, Fitz Harris and Brian Filosa, continued warming up for their Great American Music Hall gig by playing a backstage version of “Light Up Your Window.” The song was released later that year on Greene’s studio album, Back To Birth.
