The Disco Biscuits have played many venues in their hometown of Philadelphia over the past 25 years, but Tuesday night saw the band perform at one of the more unusual and meaningful locales of the band’s career. Last night, the jamtronica pioneers performed on the infield of an empty Citizens Bank Park for Take You Out To The Ball Game, a livestream special held in partnership with Live Nation and the Philadelphia Phillies to benefit PLUS1 For Black Lives Fund.
Guitarist Jon Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, drummer Allen Aucoin and keyboardist Aron Magner each sported personalized Phillies jerseys to honor the tenant of the ballpark. The 90-minute livestream incorporated elements of baseball games including introductions by PA announcer Dan Baker, signage around the stadium and the aforementioned jerseys.
The Disco Biscuits took the field after the introductions and lit into the fitting “Home Again.” Next up was a 23+ minute “Digital Buddha” sequence that featured the recently debuted original “Anthem” within. Brownie then took a moment to talk about the “incredible” experience and to ask viewers to donate to PLUS1 For Black Lives Fund.
Take You Out To The Ball Game continued with Gutwillig leading a performance of the 20-year-old original “Hope.” From there, the four-piece dug in on the classic “Spraypaint Victory” and jammed the song into “Running Into The Night,” a tune the Biscuits debuted during their 2019 New Year’s Run at PlayStation Theater in New York City. The end of “Spraypaint Victory” followed before the band ended the livestream with a nicely extended “Crickets” that spanned nearly 20 minutes and gave them a chance to let loose improvisationally.
