Warren Haynes Performs ‘Soulshine’ & More For ‘In My Room’ Series

114

Warren Haynes delivered a performance for Rolling Stone’s In My Room video series from Carriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut. The Gov’t Mule guitarist and singer performed his classic “Soulshine” along with a Blind Willie Johnson blues/gospel standard and a tune from his 2011 solo album, Man In Motion.

Haynes’ In My Room session comes in conjunction with Gibson Guitars’ Gibson Gives program, with Warren selecting the Equal Justice Initiative as his beneficiary. Fans can bid on a Les Paul autographed by Haynes to raise money for the EJI. The guitarist spoke about his In My Room session as well as the fundraiser in RS:

I’m honored to partner with Rolling Stone and Gibson for this performance and auction and wanted to do something a little different — seeing as how we all have a little more time on our hands — so instead of just doing ‘solo acoustic’ songs I thought I would accompany myself as well as incorporate a couple of friends. I chose these songs based on what we’re all going through together. I chose the Equal Justice Initiative because all citizens deserve equal justice and the fact that there even needs to be an organization dedicated to fighting for this illustrates how important the work they do is.

Haynes kicks off the session with “Soulshine,” which he originally recorded with the Allman Brothers Band in 1994 — featuring Gregg Allman on lead vocals — for ABB’s Where It All Begins album. Haynes then offered up a cover of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” and closed things out with his own “River’s Gonna Rise.”
