Bob Dylan Previews First ‘Theme Time Radio Hour’ Episode In 11 Years On SiriusXM [Listen]

A familiar voice returns to the airwaves of SiriusXM on Monday as Bob Dylan hosts the first episode of his satellite radio program, Theme Time Radio Hour, in 11 years.

The show, hosted by Dylan on SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks station, last aired in April 2009 which brought a three-year, 100-show run to a close. Dylan will be the first to admit that the return of the program is a promotional effort for his Heaven’s Door line of whiskey.

The legendary singer-songwriter opens one of the exclusive clips shared by Rolling Stone with a paraphrase from Alexander DumasThe Count of Monte Cristo,  “I’m so delighted to see you again, it makes me forget for the moment that all happiness is fleeting.” Even in just these mere previews it’s clear that, while Dylan’s primary purpose is a bit of corporate shilling, the new whiskey-themed episode of Theme Time Radio Hour will see the venerable musician return to the beloved format.

“Now I’m not gonna pull your coat too much about it, ’cause me telling you how good it is is like tickling yourself. It just doesn’t work. You just have to taste it, and it speaks for itself. But we all thought it’d be a good idea to do an episode all about whiskey,” Dylan said in one of the ads. “There’s no shortage of songs and it’s been fun to get the gang back together.”

In another clip, Dylan introduces Charlie Poole‘s 1920s rendition of “If the River Was Whiskey”, and gives some historical context as well as input as to the songwriting tradition. The episode itself is sure to be full of other historical notes and curiosities, as Dylan pontificates on the “Great Molasses Flood” that ran through the streets of Boston on January 15th, 1919 in a different clip.

Between the music, the stories, and the shameless plugs for Heaven’s Door Whiskey, the entire episode is bounded together with Dylan’s trademark wit. As he explains in one final clip about how the world has changed since the last episode, “It’s been so long, I’m not even sure if we should call it Theme Time Radio Hour anymore. I mean, does anybody still have a radio? Some folks might even be listening on a smart toaster. I don’t know, Theme Time Device Hour doesn’t sound right.”

In honor of the return of Theme Time Radio Hour to Deep Tracks on Monday, September 21st at 12 p.m. ET, the SiriusXM station will be dedicated entirely to reruns of the program through September 28th.
