On Tuesday, Brooklyn-based psych outfit Of Clocks And Clouds released their second live album, Live From Night Lights Music Festival 2019. One of the highlights from the seven-track, hour-long offering is an off-the-cuff sit in from Rob Compa (Dopapod).

Though it feels like a lifetime ago, Night Lights Music Festival took place just under 14 months ago at The Heron in Shermon, NY. The three-day event featured a stack lineup with Aqueous, Goose, Sunsquabi, Marco Benvento, Girl Talk, BIG Something, and many more rising and well-established artists.

Though they were the first act of the final day, Of Clocks And Clouds brought headliner energy to the main stage when they started their set at noon. The heavy, pulsating rhythms found throughout the set would be the ideal soundtrack to rolling out of the tent and kickstarting one last day of the festival. That energy culminated in a brief segue into “War Pigs” for the first verse, before running straight into “Hole In My Head” to close out the set.

A highlight came when Rob Compa hit the stage halfway through the set. The Dopapod guitarist joined bandleader and rhythm guitarist/lead singer Joe Salgo, as well as his younger brother and lead guitarist Tom to round out a chorus of strings. The hard-hitting “Django” was purely improvisational and showed not only the band’s interconnected abilities to jam with each other, but also anybody else who decides to jump into the mix.

However, Of Clocks And Clouds noted in a press release announcing the album that this show also marked the end of an era for the band. Even coming into 2019, OCAC has seen numerous iterations, but the group has been consistently led by Joe Salgo. At the beginning of 2019, he enlisted his younger twin brothers Nick (drums) and Tom (lead guitar) and made the group a family affair. The passage of time has since brought more change to the band, as the pandemic has kept bassist Yuri Sousov indefinitely quarantined in Maryland, Nick has since left to explore new music, and keyboardist Zander Ryzinski has also departed.

Now, Joe Salgo is once again building up a new band, this time one that will focus more on darker, psychedelic sounds. As for Live From Night Lights Music Festival 2019, Joe told Live For Live Music, “It’s a good representation of what we accomplished in 2019 and a good way to bookend it as well.”
