The final installment in our week of revisiting memorable live Halloween concert performances available in the JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) is, fittingly, Ween’s 2002 Halloween show at the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The holiday performance saw the band welcoming renowned drummer Josh Freese (Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails) for the entire show and taking the stage dressed as chickens, save for Aaron Freeman (aka Gene Ween), who bucked the trend dressed as a gnome.
Ween kicked things off with the spooky sounding “Ice Castles” followed by “The Golden Eel,” which Gener sang through the earhole of his gnome costume before discarding the head to continue with “The Stallion Pt 3″ and “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down).” Guitarist Dean Ween, aka Mickey Melchiondo, then led the band through the 12 Golden Country Greats classic, “Piss Up A Rope.” Next, the band got into “Marble Tulip Juicy Tree” from 1990’s God Ween Satan: The Oneness, which at the time was the least played song on the setlist at just 38 plays since its debut at the end of 1990, as per Brownbase. The tune saw Gener adding the lyrics to “Up On The Hill,” also off God Ween Satan. “Captain Fantasy,” “Take Me Away,” “Fat Lenny,” “Waving My Dick In The Wind” and “Mister Richard Smoker” followed before Gene picked up the megaphone on the rollicking “Stroker Ace.”
The classics “Bananas and Blow” and “Voodoo Lady” came next ahead of the relatively rare, “Albino Sunburned Girl,” which the band had only played 49 times up until that point since its 1994 debut just down the road in Carrboro, North Carolina. More iconic Ween in “The Mollusk” and “Roses Are Free” followed ahead of the ethereal “Zoloft” as well as “You Fucked Up,” “Touch My Tooter” and “Doctor Rock.” Another rarity came in the form of “Springtheme” from 1992’s Pure Guava, which the band had only played 43 times up until that point. “The HIV Song,” “Booze Me Up and Get Me High,” and “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot” came ahead of set closer, “Someday.” Ween would retake the stage to encore with “Buckingham Green.”
