Goose are a band that often goes heavy on covers. The group’s live repertoire includes songs by dozens of artists from a variety of genres. A number of covers Goose plays were originally released in 1980s and this edition of the JamBase List compiles performances of five such tunes.
The JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) features an ever-growing collection of Goose videos. Dozens of full shows/sets are included and all have been tracked out with the starting point of each song listed for ease of viewing.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (The Police)
The Police originally released “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” on their 1981 album, Ghost In The Machine. Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda handles lead vocals on Goose’s versions of the songs. On November 10, 2019, the quartet fit The Police cover into their second set at The Broadberry in Richmond, Virginia. The band played the tune fairly straight with Mitarotonda delivering a strong solo to bring the song to a close.

The Way It Is (Bruce Hornsby)
One of the more frequently played covers in Goose’s repertoire is “The Way It Is.” Bruce Hornsby wrote “The Way It Is” as the title track for his 1986 debut album with The Range. The song was a massive hit worldwide and propelled Hornsby to international stardom. Goose often extends “The Way It Is” both through Peter Anspach‘s piano solo at the start, ala Bruce, and a Mitarotonda solo at the end. This version comes from Goose’s July 27, 2019 performance at The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, Pennsylvania — a set that introduced the band to both attendees and those that watched video after it was quickly shared on YouTube.

Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses)
New wave act the Waitresses contributed a song entitled “Christmas Wrapping” to A Christmas Record, a compilation of holiday tunes put out in 1981 by the group’s label, ZE Records. “Christmas Wrapping” didn’t chart hear in America, but nearly 40 years later lives on with frequent airings on radio stations devoted to holiday songs. At the heart of the tune is a rap by frontwoman Patty Donahue that Peter Anspach handles on Goose versions of “Christmas Wrapping.” Anspach often changes the lyric “christmas cheer” to “Goosemas cheer,” especially during the band’s annual Goosemas concerts. Peter plays guitar on “Christmas Wrapping” to provide double lead harmonies with Mitarotonda. This video was recorded at last year’s Goosemas show.

Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant)
Eddy Grant was one of many artists from the 1980s helped in a big way by the advent of MTV. The video for Grant’s 1983 single “Electric Avenue,” a song originally released on his Killer On The Rampage album one year earlier, went into heavy rotation on MTV and by the end of the year was one of the biggest hits of the year. Goose’s cover of “Electric Avenue” is a rocking affair that includes an intense guitar solo from Rick. Anspach backs Mitarotonda on vocals and also provides a slinky synth line. “Electric Avenue” was played 13 times in 2019 by Goose as per Phantasy Tour, including this version from the Beanstalk Festival.

Crosseyed & Painless (Talking Heads)
Talking Heads’ iconic Remain In Light album was released in 1980 and includes the beloved track “Crosseyed & Painless,” which frontman David Byrne co-wrote with Brian Eno. The band would start the song slow in concert before transitioning into the more quick pace of the studio version. Goose often follows the same template for a cover that dates back in 2016 as per Phantasy Tour. Rick Mitarotonda utilizes an autotune effect on his voice and typically leads the jams that develop out of Goose’s covers of “Crosseyed & Painless.” Here’s a rendition that emerged out of Goose original “White Lights” from the band’s June 27, 2019 concert in Fort Collins, Colorado.
