Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh made the rounds in New Orleans this past weekend, as he not only performed with The Terrapin Family Band, but he also sat-in with Foundation Of Funk and Midnight North. In addition, a pair of upcoming Phil Lesh & Friends‘ shows at his Terrapin Crossroads establishment have been confirmed.
Phil Lesh followed shows with The Terrapin Family Band at the Joy Theater on Thursday and Friday by making a guest appearance with Foundation Of Funk on Saturday night at the House Of Blues in New Orleans. The bassist and his son Grahame Lesh joined the ensemble of George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, Eric Krasno, John Medeski, Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom and Ryan Zoidis for an encore of “Hey Pocky A-Way” by The Meters, the traditional New Orleans song “Iko Iko” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light.”
Then, on Sunday, the 78-year-old bassist joined Grahame and Midnight North at Gasa Gasa for the Grateful Dead’s “Mr. Charlie,” Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic,” the MN original “Under The Lights” and the Game Of Thrones theme song. Other guests included Cris Jacobs adding to The Band via Marvin Gaye’s “Don’t Do It” and Dusty Simmons augmenting the group on “Roamin.” Phil was also spotted in the crowd at various venues including The Maison for Blue Plate Special and back at the Joy for The Word.
In other Phil-related news, Phil Lesh & Friends will play a pair of shows at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California on May 9 and 10. The band for the run also includes Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, Stu Allen, Jeff Chimenti and John Molo. Tickets are on sale now via the venue’s website.
