Originating from Philadelphia, The Disco Biscuits have kept it close to home for their annual New Year’s Eve runs, playing in either Phily or New York City the past four years save for a sojourn to Atlanta in 2016. The jamtronica pioneers are known for their rock operas and New Year’s runs both recent and vintage have included performances of said operas along with other NYE traditions.
One of those rock operas, Hot Air Balloon, composed by guitarist Jon Gutwillig, was debuted on New Year’s Eve 1998 in Philly and reprised 20 years later in 2018. As mentioned above, tDB headed down to Atlanta’s famed Tabernacle for their 2016 NYE run. The three-set show saw the band finishing a few songs they began the previous nights. In 2017, Bisco returned to New York City and The PlayStation Theater in Times Square. The space had just gained that moniker a few years prior as the venue had been known as the Nokia and Best Buy Theaters. The band had an extensive history with the room, having played there around 40 times since 2008. In 2017, the band treated fans to three sets laced with video game references including “Pac Man” samples and renditions of “Super Mario Bros.” themes from different levels in the classic Nintendo game.

2018 saw the Biscuits back in Philly at The Fillmore where they marked the 20th anniversary of the Hot Air Balloon debut performance by performing the Gutwillig-penned rock opera once again, the ninth complete performance overall, as per Phantasy Tour. The Hot Air Balloon opus encompassed the first two sets, which saw a sit-in from pianist Holly Bowling on the intro to “The Very Moon,” and concluded with the titular number of the opera as well as the New Year’s countdown. The Disco Biscuits would encore with Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell.”

In 2019, tDB headed back to New York City and The PlayStation Theater. Fittingly, the Biscuits would be the last band to play the space as it sadly closed down after the new year. The show included a three-song first set and a second set that began with “Run Like Hell,” something of a NYE tradition for the band, with the countdown coming during “Anthem” and after “RLH.” The Disco Biscuits would initiate the encore with “Frog Legs” (tDB encored with the song at PlayStation NYE in 2017 and in Atlanta 2016) which headed into a “Run Like Hell” reprise to say farewell to the PlayStation and bring the evening to a close.
