David Ferguson Announces Debut Album ‘Nashville No More’ & Shares Single

76

Acclaimed producer David Ferguson will release his debut album, Nashville No More, on September 3 through Fat Possum Records. The guest-filled album features the lead single, “Knocking Around Nashville,” written by Pat McLaughlin.

Ferguson, whose resume includes working closely with Johnny Cash, John Prine and Sturgill Simpson, self-produced the 10-songs on Nashville No More, which he recorded to “pass time during the pandemic.” Ferguson and Prine co-founded The Butcher Shoppe recording studio in Nashville, which closed last year after the property was sold and the building demolished.

“I’m so used to doing something and then moving on to the next thing, but I think it’s going to be neat to have a record come out,” Ferguson stated. “The hardest thing to do is doing a record on yourself. You’ve got to learn how to listen to it like you’re listening to somebody else. Man, that takes gumption.”

Guests contributing to Nashville No More include vocalist Margo Price, guitarists Dan Auerbach, Mark Howard, Justin Moses, Billy Sanford and Kenny Vaughan, mandolinists Sierra Hull and Ronnie McCoury, dobro player Jerry Douglas, banjoist Béla Fleck and multi-instrumentalists Stuart Duncan and Tim O’Brien. Fellow Nashville-based musicians, pedal steel guitarist Russ Pahl, keyboardist Mike Rojas, bassists Mike Bub and Dave Roe and percussionist Sam Bacco, also appear on the record.

“The Ferg is a bonafide card-carrying legendary hillbilly genius and when he talks you better shut up and listen,” Sturgill Simpson stated. “He’s played bass for Jimmy Martin, chopped tape for Cowboy Jack Clement, been called a dear friend by Johnny Cash and John Prine, recorded every one of your damn heroes at least twice, and he’s forgotten more about music, specifically recording music, than you’ll ever know in your entire existence. So … next time you start thinking your shit doesn’t stink just stop and look in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘I’m sorry and you’ll have to excuse me but … is your name David Ferguson?’”

“Knocking Around Nashville,” whose demo Ferguson recorded in the mid-1990s, can be streamed below:
