Foo Fighters offered the first preview of the band’s upcoming Bee Gees tribute album Hail Satin, released under the pseudonym Dee Gees, with a cover of “You Should Be Dancing”. The tribute album—which also features a B-side of live Medicine At Midnight tracks—is out on July 17th for the second Record Store Day “Drop” date.
From the opening bass notes, this rendition of the 1976 Number 1 Hit thumps with the true energy of a vintage disco. In a previous appearance on BBC Radio 2—during which Foo Fighters debuted the cover—frontman Dave Grohl indicated his commitment to recording authentic Bee Gees covers. That commitment immediately becomes apparent when the normally gruff-voiced former grunge star delivers an almost unbelievable falsetto on par with Barry Gibb.
“We started recording the instrumental track, and then I thought, ‘OK, well I’m gonna go out and sing it…’ and let me tell you: I have never, ever in my life sung like that, but it was the easiest song I have ever sung in my entire life!” Grohl told BBC Radio 2.
Foo Fighters—or Dee Gees—have been road testing “You Should Be Dancing” as well, including the song as part of the band’s three-song encore at Madison Square Garden last month. That show marked the first live music event at the World’s Most Famous Arena in 466 days, with the venue sharing a short film about the event shortly thereafter.
