TAUK released its seventh, full-length studio album, Chaos Companion, on Friday, with the electro-prog quartet offering up a fully-formed cinematic musical journey.
Chaos Companion was born out of quarantine as the band was forced to abandon its marathon touring schedule and look inward. Even as drive-in and pod concerts became a viable option, TAUK stuck it out in the studio, finally given the chance to dive deeper into compositional construction than ever before.
From the ambient opening scroll credits of “Chandara” to the world influences of “Make Your Move”, Chaos Companion finds several new sides of the instrumental ensemble. On “Dormammu”, TAUK merges its time-tested sound with digitally composed EDM for something completely new from the band celebrating a decade in its trademark configuration.
Bassist Charlie Dolan describes “Dormammu” as, “a trap drum machine-meets-Led Zeppelin sound & beat, with builds and drops along the way. A danceable and anthemic journey accompanied by syncopated and soaring sounds of Eric Bloom (Trumpet) and Ryan Zoidis (Saxophone) of The Shady Horns (Lettuce, Soulive).”

That electronic influence isn’t just confined to “Dormammu”, as tracks like “Moon Dub” and “The Let Out” carry that enhanced sound in addition to hip-hop overtones emanating from drummer Isaac Teel.
“These songs are presented with a different approach where we used a lot more tracks and layers to create a more cinematic sound,” keyboardist Alric Carter said in a press release. “A lot of our material has been live performance-based, but with this album, we used Ableton Live and digital audio workstations to expand our musical palette.”
The cinematic feel of Chaos Companion goes well beyond just the enveloping feel of the music. For singles “The Let Out“, “Moon Dub“, and “Make Your Move“, the band collaborated with directors Dani Barbieri and Sophia Conger to create immersive music videos that are as humorously offbeat as they are surreally personal.
