Umphrey’s McGee played the first of two UMBowl shows Friday at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The band brought back the football-themed experience for the first time since 2016, expanding to two nights for UMBowl VIII.
Last night’s show was also the first UMBowl held during the football season as previous UMBowls (which were performed each year between 2010 and 2016 including at The Cap in 2014) had been held in either April or May. The band was set to hold UMBowl VIII in May 2020, but the pandemic forced it to be rescheduled, first to September 2020 and finally to this weekend.
UM played three sets Friday night — two fan-driven sets and one band-choice set — just as they will again tonight at The Cap. The show began with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” set featuring real-time fan voting via text message. A large screen posted three song options for those in attendance and streaming at home to vote on, with “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” beating out “JaJunk” and “Bridgeless” for the first song of the evening. Voters then drove a segue into “Push The Pig” instead of choosing “Example 1” or “The Bottom Half.”

“FF” and “Thin Air” were passed over in favor of top vote-getter “Utopian Fir” that featured drummer Kris Myers leading a jam on Rage Against The Machine’s “Bombtrack.” Voters then selected the ending of the previously outvoted “JaJunk” over having the band end “Miss Tinkle’s” or “Bridgeless.” The final tally of the set saw “Wappy Sprayberry” and “The Triple Wide” defeated by “Cemetery Walk II,” which included guitarist Brendan Bayliss joining Joel Cummins on keyboards.
Bayliss and guitarist Jake Cinninger went acoustic for the fan-voted “Acoustic All Request” second set. “In The Kitchen” got the partially unplugged set started and segued into “Anchor Drops.” Cinninger then led the band through “Booth Love,” followed by Bayliss steering the group on “Divisions.” Bayliss dedicated the subsequent “Nemo” to The Capitol Theatre’s Pete Shapiro, who later presented the band with a trophy before the start of the encore. “Nemo” transitioned into “Uncle Wally” and then back into “Nemo.” The acoustic segment ended with “Water” segueing into a return to “In The Kitchen.”
The third set was constructed of songs chosen by the band, who kept it to just a pair of originals. “Der Bluten Kat” opened and closed the third set, with “Resolution” played within. The encore began with the aforementioned trophy presentation followed by “Partyin’ Peeps.” The “Choose Your Own Adventure” screen was lowered and fans were given the chance to pick the finale with “Wizard Burial Ground” edging out “Front Porch.”
UMBowl VIII continues tonight at The Capitol Theatre. A livestream is available via TourGigs.
