Billy Strings arrived in Norfolk, VA on Saturday where he offered the first-ever mash-up of “Dust In A Baggie” and “Love And Regret“. The show at the 9,100 capacity Chartway Arena also saw the debut of Chuck Berry‘s “Promised Land”, which opened the show.

With the Grateful Dead-favorite’s opening line “Left my home in Norfolk, Virginia, California on my mind,” Strings started the show. Alongside his bandmates Billy Failing (banjo), Jarrod Walker (mandolin), and Royal Masat (bass), Strings rattled off a pair of originals with “Hollow Heart” and “While I’m Waiting Here” ahead of Jerry Reed‘s “Likes of Me”. The covers continued with Chris Henry & The Hardcore Grass‘ “West Dakota Rose”.

The familiar instrumentation of “Love And Regret” soon took a surprising detour into the lyrics of “Dust In A Baggie” for a wistful down-tempo musical mashup (check out a fan-shot video here). Set one continued on with the mirage of “Highway Hypnosis” and “This Old World” before a pairing of “Ernest T. Grass” and “Little Maggie” sent the band into setbreak.

Returning for the second frame, Billy linked up “Taking Water” and “Ice Bridges” before Hank Snow‘s vow, “I’ll Remember You, Love, In My Prayers”. This flowed into the upbeat holler of “Red Daisy” before the second geographic reference, “Blue Virginia Blues”. Strings and company waded through the “Turmoil & Tinfoil” next only to “Watch It Fall”. Jimmie Skinner‘s “Doin’ My Time” followed before a cover of JJ Cale‘s “Ride Me High” whipped the arena into a frenzy only for the Robert Hunter-penned “Thunder” delivered one final crack of lightning to finish set two.

Taking the Chartway Arena stage one more time, Billy offered the fourth-ever telling of Pink Floyd‘s “Brain Damage”. The cover originally debuted as the finale of the Strings’ encore-less October 29th show ExploreAsheville.com Arena, the first night of his Wizard of Oz-themed Halloween run.

Billy Strings’ tour continues on February 15th in Augusta, GA. For tickets and a full list of tour dates click here.
