Joe Russo’s Almost Dead welcomed saxophonist and frequent collaborator Stuart Bogie on Saturday night in Philadelphia. The guest accompanied the band for the entire two-set show at The Fillmore Philadelphia.
“New Speedway Boogie” was selected as the opening song of the first set. The lengthy opener flowed into “Estimated Prophet,” which then segued into “Dark Star.” The seamless sequence continued with the band dropping into “Here Comes Sunshine” as guitarist Tom Hamilton delivered the song’s final verse and completed the version started the night prior.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Kicks Off The Fillmore Philadelphia Run
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead got their two-night stand at The Fillmore Philadelphia underway on Friday.
The six musicians moved on to “St. Stephen,” quickly hitting on an intense peak before dissolving into several minutes of dissonant ambience with Bogie on flute, ahead of a return to the song’s climactic conclusion. Skipping the “William Tell” bridge, JRAD instead fired up The Beatles’ “Hey Bulldog.” The first set was capped with “Viola Lee Blues” and a return to “New Speedway Boogie.”
A loping “Easy Wind,” sung by guitarist Scott Metzger, allowed JRAD to ease into the start of the second set. The bluesy open was trailed by the psychedelic “China Cat Sunflower” but instead of coupling with “I Know You Rider,” the band instead shifted into “Eyes Of The World,” setting off on a 20-minute improvised excursion that included a quiet breakdown featuring tender interplay between Marco Benevento’s piano and the pair of guitarist. A similar dynamic emerged during the subsequent 15-minute “Playing In The Band” that roared behind Joe Russo’s thunderous drumming and Dave Dreiwitz‘s thumping bass during a jam on Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.”
More improvisation flowed through a 19-minute “Sugaree” and a 20-minute “Throwing Stones.” Hamilton, a Philly native, punctuated the second set by leading the group through “Brown Eyed Women.” The fans at The Fillmore called the band back for an encore, which was the second Beatles cover of the night, “Dear Prudence.”
