The Marcus King Band blew a Southern breeze through Port Chester, NY’s The Capitol Theatre this past weekend for a pair of weekend concerts. Eponymous bandleader Marcus King brought with him his backing band, sporting the recent addition of second guitarist Drew Smithers (Bishop Gunn).
The past couple years have seen a few lineup changes from MKB, dating back to the 2020 departure of saxophonist Dean Mitchell. During the pandemic, King continued to experiment with his group’s format as he took the Marcus King Trio—featuring drummer Jack Ryan and bassist Stephen Campbell—on the road for a number of drive-in concerts.
Smithers’ addition to the Marcus King Band presents just the latest in a series of artistic evolutions. At the center of it all is King, the former child guitar prodigy now embarking into adulthood at 25-years-old. While his name may grace the marquee, it’s the musicians that surround him who bring his unique blend of Southern blues to life.
Friday’s show saw King pay tribute to classic influences like Willie Dixon, The Temptations, Gene McDaniels, and more while Saturday witnessed the fiery guitar player honoring the Southern rock greats like The Allman Brothers Band, with both “Mountain Jam” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, and The Marshall Tucker Band, with the show-closing “Can’t You See”.
