New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club has long been the spot to catch spontaneous collaborations and once in a lifetime improvised performances from the jazz world’s top players, but no one in the intimate club could have anticipated the historic funk jam that occurred between bass titans Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, MonoNeon, and Derrick Hodge Sunday night.

Photos and videos posted to social media show the four phenoms uniting onstage during the final night of Marcus Miller’s Blue Note residency. Even with the sound turned off, it is clear that every one on and off the stage is locked into the groove as each bassist improvises in a different register, with MonoNeon using his trusty whammy pedal to raise the pitch of his bass and pluck a melody to complement Victor Wooten’s chords as Miller and Hodge provide percussive slapping and low-end thump respectively.

Like a Mt. Rushmore of bass guitar, the four-headed funk Goliath displayed continuity and progress over multiple generations. Miller even donned a t-shirt honoring jazz bass founding father Ron Carter, who would be like the George Washington to his Abe Lincoln.
