Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia has officially recognized and commended Gregg Allman’s legacy in advance of the fifth anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band co-founder’s death tomorrow (Friday, May 27). The state will honor Gregg by flying the Georgia flag at half mast over Atlanta’s Georgia State Capitol building from 12:01 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday.
Gregg Allman was born in Nashville on December 8, 1947 but spent most of his life living in Georgia. He co-founded The Allman Brothers Band with his brother, guitarist Duane Allman, bassist Berry Oakley, guitarist Dickey Betts and drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson in 1969. The group withstood a number of tragedies over the course of a legendary career that ended in 2014. The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995.
On May 27, 2017, Gregg Allman passed away at his home in Richmond Hill, Georgia after a lengthy battle with liver cancer at age 69. Read the commendation below:
