Pearl Jam Welcomes Former Drummer Dave Krusen In Fresno

Pearl Jam was joined by original drummer Dave Krusen for 10 songs during their concert on Monday night at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Krusen helped fill in for Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, who missed his third show in a row after testing positive for COVID-19.

Dave Krusen was a member of Pearl Jam for a seven-month stint that included the recording of their debut album Ten. Krusen last played more than one song live with the band way back on May 25, 1991. The Tacoma native emerged towards the middle of last night’s main set for Ten cuts “Once,” “Why Go,” “Even Flow,” “Garden” and “Black” and helped Pearl Jam end the set with “Porch.” Krusen also added to “Jeremy,” “Deep” and “Alive” from Ten during the encore as well as “State Of Love And Trust” from the Singles soundtrack.

Once again, touring member Josh Klinghoffer and Seattle-based drummer Richard Stuverud took turns for the rest of the show behind the kit as they did in Oakland on Thursday and Friday. Frontman Eddie Vedder did not perform solo to start the evening for the first time this tour. Vedder told the audience early on he wasn’t feeling well and hadn’t felt so ill since a June 1995 concert when Neil Young filled in for him.

Eddie made it through the whole show in Fresno. The band went heavy on material from Ten as nine of the LP’s 11 songs made the setlist. A big surprise came early on when guitarist Stone Gossard handled lead vocals on rarity “Don’t Gimme No Lip,” which was last performed on August 22, 2016 as per Setlist.FM. Additionally, Klinghoffer led the group through a debut cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” towards the end of last night’s main set.

The night ended with a six-song encore. After the aforementioned section featuring Krusen behind the kit, Stuverud hopped on drums for a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” and live staple “Yellow Ledbetter.” The tour continues in Sacramento on Wednesday night.
