Umphrey’s McGee Shares Pro-Shot Video Of “Fenced In” Live Debut At The Caverns [Watch]

Umphrey’s McGee has shared pro-shot footage from the band’s recent show at The Caverns in Pelham, TN featuring the live debut of “Fenced In” from its new album Asking For A Friend.

As with 2009’s Mantis, but unlike the rest of the group’s previous albums, Umphrey’s made the decision to not play the songs from Asking For A Friend live until after the album debuted on July 1st. “We want people’s first experience with these new songs to be these studio recordings,” keyboardist Joel Cummins explained in a recent interview with Live For Live Music. “That was our thought process with Mantis too. We put our heart and soul into these for so long, and to us, these are like the essential versions of the songs. … So why not let people hear ’em this way first and then bring them into the live experience.”

Now that the album has been out for nearly two months, the band has started adding the new tracks to its live repertoire. “Always October” was the first song to make its live debut on Sunday at The Caverns, followed by “Fenced In” the following night.

“Fenced In” was written by guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss in response to the police killing of George Floyd in May of 2020. It is the first Umphrey’s McGee song to include an expletive, which Bayliss discussed in an interview featured on The JamBase Podcast. “I was trying to think of what is the worst thing I could say about hate,” he told JamBase’s Andy Kahn. “How do I explain how much I hate hate?”
