Guitarist Bob Weir brought his Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros ensemble featuring The Wolfpack horns and strings to Washington D.C. last night for the first of four shows with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.
Wednesday’s concert marked the fulfillment of a longtime Bobby Weir goal to present orchestral scores of Grateful Dead music. Conductor Steven Reineke led the National Symphony Orchestra through a weaving prelude to kick off the evening. The 10-minute “Overture” incorporated hints of “The Other One,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cassidy,” “Terrapin Station” and many other GD classics.
Weir emerged following the “Overture” along with bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, pianist Jeff Chimenti, cellist Alex Kelly, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown all wearing fancy tuxedos. The nine musicians joined the NSO for “Row Jimmy” as well as the beloved pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” to form the rest of last night’s first set.
Wednesday’s second set began with an orchestral “Uncle John’s Band.” The collective then gave “Touch Of Grey” and “Shakedown Street” the symphonic treatment. “Shakedown” led into the gorgeous “Days Between” played by just Weir and the National Symphony Orchestra. The rest of Wolf Bros and The Wolfpack returned in time for a “Cassidy” that gave way to the psychedelic era gem “Dark Star.” Bobby and the full ensemble went on to play “Sugar Magnolia” with its usual “Sunshine Daydream” conclusion along with the “Brokedown Palace” sermon.
The nine-piece version of Bob Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack capped the evening sans NSO for “Bird Song” and “Loose Lucy.” A reprise of “Loose Lucy” came as the concert’s encore. The run continues tonight.
