Trey Anastasio Band saxophonist James Casey was the guest on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Comes A Time podcast. Casey, who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer, talked with hosts Oteil Burbridge and Mike Finoia about his chemotherapy, touring with TAB, his Christmas record and more.
The conversation got underway with James revealing he’s working with Osiris on a podcast of his own. He also noted that dealing with his cancer treatment has changed his plans somewhat but spoke candidly about his chemotherapy and the challenges of working around it, noting that after filming the podcast he would begin one of his treatments and that he would be “asleep for the rest of the day.”
“There’s ways to get through this particular chemo that I’m on while still having a life,” Casey said on how he amazingly navigates the treatments while keeping up with his work schedule. “Being a musician obviously I don’t have the day-to-day as everyone else does. So I can plan out the things I need to do. It takes a lot of planning. A lot of listening to your body. Sometimes I can’t do everything.”
Casey went on to talk about how chemo affects his energy levels:
“I’m sure we’ve all been athletes at some point. You know how you get tired and then there’s always this extra little bit that you got…that’s gone. The extra is gone…there’s no more energy left. The chemo…what it does…your body basically sees the poison and tries its best to get it out of you. And it takes so much energy to do that, while it’s also killing the cancer cells. It just takes so much energy in your body just to get it out…that’s the fatigue, that’s why you get so tired and why I have to eat as many calories as I possibly can. Because your body’s working so hard on the chemo.”
Oteil then asked James if the treatment takes his appetite away and James replied, “The reason I have an appetite now is weed.” While he noted he didn’t particularly care for the high and hadn’t smoked since 2008, he said edibles helped with his appetite.
The conversation then turned to James performing live with Trey Anastasio Band and the saxophonist gave some interesting insights on in-ear monitors. James also detailed how Trey’s crew has had his back when it came to his needs as he dealt with treatment on the road.
“I’ve got to give Trey’s camp all the love in the world…Richard Glasgow, Abbey, everybody over there, Patrick, they made it so I could be on tour. And then they flew me home for the two days for chemo…from home, to the doctor, back home, back to them, making sure that everything was taken care of as much as possible.” James went on to detail how they kept a bus handy at all times on tour so that he could rest there as well.
Casey also spoke about how cancer has changed how he solos and not always in a negative way as well as his Christmas album, the proceeds for which he is donating to help the uninsured get cancer screenings, and more. Watch the complete episode of Comes A Time with James Casey below:
