Caroline Rose Interprets A Dream In New Single, “The Doldrums” [Video]

Caroline Rose digs deep into their subconscious with the new single “The Doldrums”, set to appear on The Art of Forgetting, out March 24th on New West Records.

The dreary, dreamy track is lined with lush, fluttering strings reminiscent of “The Aquarium” from Camille Saint-SaënsThe Carnival of the Animals suite. Rose is forced to confront their worst instincts, suppressed below the surface of the unconscious mind, “In a dream / There’s someone I hate / A smile creeps across my face / As they burn there at the stake / Their hands are bound / They’re crying out / But then I jolt awake with sweat pooled at my brow / If that was me then / Then who am I now?”

“‘The Doldrums’ was the song I wrote when I was realizing I had basically no understanding of self-compassion,” Rose said. “It’s about the voice inside my head that blames me for everything that’s ever gone wrong, mostly things out of my control. My idea of rebirth and reformation at the time was killing off my old self and finding a new one, rather than simply being kind to myself…Not because I didn’t want to be, but because I didn’t really know how.”

The Art of Forgetting finds Rose—who identifies with they/them pronouns—on the other side of a series of dramatic life events. Chief among them is a breakup, which sent Rose on a journey of introspection that resulted in some of their most personal songwriting to date. The wry witticism of 2020’s Superstar, 2018’s LONER, and their 2014 debut I Will Not Be Afraid is an indelible element of their voice, but the facade of humor is unmasked by biting honesty to reveal harsh self-reflection.

“Every time I make an album I’ll come out of it learning a lot about myself,” Rose said. “Now I look back and see the healing of a wound. I feel like a new version of myself. I think one for the better.”

Caroline Rose – “The Doldrums” (Visualizer)

“The Doldrums” Lyrics

In a dream
There’s someone I hate
A smile creeps across my face
As they burn there at the stake

Their hands are bound
They’re crying out
But then I jolt awake with sweat pooled at my brow

If that was me then
Then who am I now?

I can’t erase the past
And I won’t close my eyes
All I ask is silence from the noise inside my mind

There comes a time
In every life
When you have to question what it means to be alive

If that was me then
Then who am I now?
