Mac DeMarco cleaned out his vault on Friday with the release of 199 tracks on streaming services, totaling over nine hours of music. Titled One Wayne G, the collection comprises a collection of demos and other rough sketches recorded between 2018 and early 2023.
Though DeMarco has kept up a steady album output for most of his career, there was an uncharacteristically long gap between 2019’s Here Comes The Cowboy and the instrumental Five Easy Hot Dogs released earlier this year. Like his travel log Five Easy Hot Dogs, where songs were named after the place where they were recorded, most of the tracks on One Wayne G are labeled with the date they were recorded.
One Wayne G follows in DeMarco’s decade-long tradition of publishing an album of demos after releasing the fully-formed project. Therefore One Wayne G shouldn’t be considered an album—even though at times it feels just about as focused as Five Easy Hot Dogs, something that says more about the wandering album than the demos. Though the bulk of the release is comprised of two-ish minute instrumentals, there are also some more fully-formed efforts like “Proud True Toyota”, “Turn My TV On”, and “Cowboy Shit” with lyrics and fleshed-out structures.
In an Instagram story announcing the release, Mac’s Record Label included two photos of Wayne Gretzky, the Hockey Hall of Famer who played for the Oilers in DeMarco’s hometown of Edmonton and also wore number 99. One photo of Gretzky from his tenure with the Los Angeles Kings included the caption, “There is only One Wayne G”.
