In a sure sign Phish will soon hit the road, a new Live Bait compilation has arrived. Live Bait Vol. 20, available for free via LivePhish.com, features live performances from the Phish vault selected by archivist Kevin Shapiro recorded in regions/cities the quartet will play this spring and summer.
The latest Live Phish compilation includes 11 songs/segments spanning 1992 through 2018. Up first are a ferocious “Run Like An Antelope” recorded at Seattle Center Arena on October 2, 1995 and a fiery “Maze” thrown down at the Berkeley Greek on August 28, 1993. Live Bait Vol. 20 continues with a “My Friend, My Friend” featuring a “Little Drummer Boy Jam” played at The Palace in Hollywood on March 18, 1993. A highlight of the collection follows with an intense “Mike’s Song” that saw bassists Oteil Burbridge and Stacy Starkweather come out for the ensuing “Bass Jam.” The 17-minute sequence was performed in Birmingham, Alabama on May 2, 1994.
Shapiro’s next choice was the Alpharetta 2018 “Ghost,” the only previously released track included in the new compilation. The collection rolls on with the “Demand”/”David Bowie” pairing delivered in Charlotte on April 24, 1994; an outrageous “Reba” from a Fall 1996 visit to Pittsburgh and high-octane “You Enjoy Myself” laid down in Ithaca, New York on November 22, 1992. Additionally, Live Bait Vol. 20 includes a memorable “Harry Hood” from July 1, 1994 in Philadelphia, spot-on “Divided Sky” played at Madison Square Garden on December 30, 1995 and exploratory +30-minute sequence linking “Piper” and “Gumbo” captured at Fiddler’s Green in Englewood, Colorado on September 27, 2000.
