Sierra Ferrell Shares Stunning ‘Seven Spanish Angels’ Cover For Spotify’s Willie Nelson Birthday Celebration

Sierra Ferrell shared a cover of “Seven Spanish Angels” via Spotify’s SIngles Sessions celebrating Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday. Willie Nelson and Ray Charles first released the song in 1984.

Penned by Troy Seals and Eddie Setser, the songwriting duo wrote the number as a tejano-tinged tribute to country legend Marty Robbins. Marty passed away in 1982 and the song was pitched to Willie Nelson. Hearing the demo, producer Billy Sherrill wanted it for Ray Charles. Upon hearing Willie was on the song, Sherrill suggested Nelson and Charles duet. “Seven Spanish Angels” became a big hit for both and highlighted a longtime friendship between the two iconic artists.

Sierra Ferrell recorded “Seven Spanish Angels” for Spotify’s Singles Sessions celebrating Willie’s 90th birthday on April 29. In partnership with Luck Reunion, a group of musicians including Margo Price and The War & Treaty headed to Willie’s home recording facility in the Hill Country of Central Texas, Pedernales Recording Studio, to cut a cover from the Nelson catalog.
