The String Cheese Incident kicked off a three-night stand at Salvage Station in Asheville on Thursday night. The sextet honored the state hosting the shows by dusting off “Trail Of Tears,” Peter Rowan’s ode to North Carolina, which was last played in front of a live audience nearly 19 years prior.
Guitarist Bill Nershi led his bandmates through “Trail Of Tears” in the middle of last night’s first set. Rowan’s original was featured on his 1988 album with the Nashville Bluegrass Band, New Moon Rising. The String Cheese Incident debuted their rendition on April 8, 2000 in Peoria, Illinois as per Phantasy Tour’s statistics. Seven additional covers of the song followed through July 29, 2004. Cheese did perform “Trail Of Tears” backstage at Wilmington, North Carolina’s Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on April 26, 2022 during a livestreamed acoustic set that was broadcast when the evening’s concert was cut short due to weather.

Peter Rowan Recalls Meeting Jerry Garcia, Forming Old & In The Way + More On ‘The JamBase Podcast’
Season Two, Episode Seven of ‘The JamBase Podcast’ presents the premiere of “Jerry Stories” featuring Peter Rowan sharing memories of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia.
The bust out came a few songs after The String Cheese Incident began Thursday’s show with old school instrumental “Dudley’s Kitchen.” Bassist Keith Moseley then pointed out what a beautiful evening it was and helmed “Get Tight.” Next, Cheese took on Jean Luc Ponty’s “Rhum ‘n’ Zouc” and the Jason Hann-sung “Short Stack Willie” before performing “Trail Of Tears.” An adventurous “Shine” followed ahead of SCI pairing “Way Back Home” and “Orange Blossom Special” to end the first set. The latter was played for just the second time since 2017.
Last night’s second set saw the band show off their genre-bending ways starting with the livetronica-tinged instrumental “Valley Of The Jig.” Funk workouts “Sirens” and “On The Road” were linked next. Multi-instrumentalist Michael Kang then fronted the group on a “These Waves” Cheese slickly segued into “Djibouti Bump.” The String Cheese Incident closed the frame with a seamless segment that saw a cover of John Coltrane’s “Impressions” birth a “Bird Song” jam, which gave way to “Best Feeling” from their 1999 Breathe collaboration with Keller Williams. “Best Feeling” bled into the Bob Marley classic “Exodus” and then SCI punctuated the set with the beloved “Restless Wind.”
Keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth was in the vocal spotlight for last night’s “Colliding” encore. The String Cheese Incident returns to Salvage Station tonight and tomorrow.
