Leftover Salmon Shares Funky ‘Fire And Brimstone’ Cover Featuring Oliver Wood

Leftover Salmon released a rendition of Link Wray’s “Fire And Brimstone.” The track will land on the jamgrass pioneers’ upcoming album, Grass Roots, arriving through Compass Records on May 19.

Grass Roots sees LoS mining some of the songs “The Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band played when they first jammed in a Telluride Bluegrass Festival campground,” as per a press release. Salmon previously shared a grassy rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist Of Fate” and The Delmore Brothers’ “Blue Railroad Train” featuring Billy Strings. Elsewhere on Grass Roots, LoS interprets songs from Grateful Dead, David Bromberg, Seldom Scene and more.

The band now shares “Fire And Brimstone” featuring Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers. The song originally appearing on Link Wray’s 1971 self-titled LP has existed in the LoS live repertoire for years. The group, however, decided to add a twist to the Grass Roots version.

“Previously, we covered it more based on the Neville Brothers version, but for this record we decided to cover the original Link Wray version that is more raw and funky,” multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt noted. “This seemed like a perfect fit for Oliver Wood’s guest vocals and slide guitar work.”
