After a bumpy debut in 2022 that saw an evening of headliners canceled due to weather, Sacred Rose will take a hiatus in 2023. In place of the genre-fluid Chicago music festival, organizers have instead promised “like minded” and “SR-adjacent events” throughout the city area.
“We have spent the last several months analyzing the past and future of the Sacred Rose experience,” organizers wrote on social media. “We previously said that the biggest win of it all was bringing this community together, to celebrate the culture that we all love and live for. That’s exactly what we intend to keep doing through like minded & SR-adjacent events we are participating in throughout the Chicagoland area, one of which will be a new & unique 2 day event in September 2023.”
That said, organizers confirmed that there will be no Sacred Rose proper in 2023. They are, however, actively working on a new Sacred Rose “sometime down the line already,” which will be “reimagined” at a brand new venue when it happens.
“We’re always listening, and hope you’ve all been well,” the post concluded. “Stay up on our socials for updates, fun events, throwbacks and more.”

Sacred Rose debuted August 26th–28th at SeatGeek Stadium just outside Chicago in Bridgeview, IL. The expansive turf campus allowed presenters to erect four genre-specific stages hosting jam bands, indie rock, Americana, and jamtronic acts. Top performers included a special PHILCO collaboration between Phil Lesh & Friends and members of Wilco along with sets by Khruangbin, Goose, STS9, The War On Drugs, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and many more.
Before the festival even began, the production team was dealt a devastating blow as Black Pumas—one of the scheduled headliners—cleared all of their remaining tour dates just 11 days before gates opened. Faced with such a short window, organizers were unable to book a replacement in time. The show went on, however, and presented two full days of music at SeatGeek. It was on the third and final day though that severe weather forced the festival to cancel the evening’s headlining performances from Khruangbin and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. The next week, organizers announced they would refund the base price of a single-day ticket—or the proportionate one-third of a three-day ticket—for those who missed out on the headlining sets.
As attendees went home and dried out from the anticlimactic third day of Sacred Rose, many checked their bank accounts to find hundreds or even thousands of dollars in false charges. SeatGeek Stadium accepted responsibility for what it called a “configuration error” in the facility’s system for concession transactions. Ultimately, most charges were reversed within 3–5 business days.
