The Disco Biscuits followed the Road to New Orleans all the way to the beautiful Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts for two nights of trance-inducing jams during the second weekend of Jazz Fest.

The upscale concert hall was an unusually nice setting for the New Orleans Biscuits run, especially in comparison with the smaller, less opulent venues saturated with post-Jazz Fest festivities. The most luxurious part, though, after festering at the fairgrounds all day was the powerful air conditioning, particularly on Friday night when the temperature and humidity reached excessive heights before a Saturday downpour zapped the moisture from the air.

Colorful lights and lasers brought the theater to life as Marc Brownstein, Jon “Barber” GutwilligAllen Aucoin, and Aron Magner let loose over the course of four electrifying sets, one of which (the first set on Saturday) featured a special guest appearance by bassist Karina Rykman, who sat in on David Bowie‘s “Let’s Dance”. Rykman was in town playing with Marco Benevento as well as making her NOLA debut with her eponymous solo band.

The two-night run was the culmination of Magner’s Jazz Festing. The keyboardist kicked off the week with Billy & The Kids before then playing a long-awaited SPAGA Plays Dead set with his jazz trio at Toulouse Theatre. The shows were also a good warm-up for another classy Biscuits affair, TranceAtlantic, set to take place at Reykjavík’s iconic Harpa Concert Hall later this month.
