A hailstorm of Biblical proportions sent Louis Tomlinson fans fleeing from Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Wednesday and injured nearly 100 attendees. A statement from local EMS confirmed that seven concertgoers were taken to the hospital while another “80 or 90” were treated for injuries at the scene.

Wednesday’s concert by the former member of One Direction was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., though a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service forced two delays. By 10:25 p.m., the famed Morrison, CO venue ultimately canceled the concert well after golf ball-sized hail had begun raining down on attendees.

“They gave a warning real quick. They were like ‘there’s severe, severe, severe weather. You should head to your cars, could be including hail. T minus 10 seconds.’ People were walking down as fast as they could, and this hail starting pelting everyone in the head,” two concertgoers told Denver7.

While Red Rocks is celebrated for its beauty, the open-air amphitheater provided little covering, forcing fans to hurry back to their vehicles or seek limited shelter inside the venue, with many holding boxes over their heads for cover. Along the way, dozens suffered injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones. According to West Metro Fire, those taken to the hospital suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Others returning to their vehicles found their windshields smashed due to the force of the hail.

After the storm passed, Red Rocks issued a statement on Thursday morning. While there is no official rescheduled date as of yet, the venue wrote, “We hope to see Louis Tomlinson and his fans back soon under clear Colorado skies – we know this was supposed to be a special night and many of you traveled long distances to be here, which makes decisions regarding the postponement or cancellation of shows even harder.”

“And, we’re having a little talk with Mother Nature about this weather business at Red Rocks,” the statement continued. “Between a wind-whipped opening night wildfire, snow showers, torrential rains and hail, it’s been a crazy six weeks in the foothills.”

Red Rocks has a busy schedule of concerts through the rest of the summer, with Shakey Graves performing tonight, June 22nd, and Widespread Panic returning for its annual three-night run this weekend. The venue cautioned that those attending upcoming shows “should probably bring some sunscreen. That’s springtime in the Rockies for ya.”
