Dave Grohl is back to doing Dave Grohl things, which on Monday happened to entail playing classic rock covers with Taylor Hawkins‘ old side project Chevy Metal at a bowling alley. The show at Simi Valley, CA’s Harley’s Valley Bowl also featured the late Foo Fighters drummer’s son Shane Hawkins, a recurring Chevy Metal collaborator as of late.

While some unassuming bowlers were practicing for league night, over in the bar Chevy Metal ran through a stable of classic rock favorites. Kicking off the show with The Police‘s “Next To You”, the setlist also included covers of Thin Lizzy‘s “Jailbreak”, Led Zeppelin‘s “Moby Dick” with Shane going full Bonzo, Black Sabbath‘s “The Wizard”, Spïnal Tap‘s “Jazz Odyssey”, a hell of a lot of Van Halen with “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love”, “Jaimie’s Crying”, and “Everybody Wants Some”, and a closing “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” with Grohl on vocals.

As if the Foo Fighters frontman wasn’t enough star power, also filling in on the show built for FM rock radio were drummers Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), and Gregg Bissonette (David Lee Roth). Without stepping over the line, all you can say after a show like that is mark it, Dude.

Shane Hawkins of course made a splash during the tribute concerts for his father in London and L.A. when he sat behind the kit for several Foo Fighters classics that were as emotionally wrought as they were outright rocking. He also joined Foo Fighters during their headlining set at Boston Calling back in May, one of their first appearances since Taylor’s death last March, and played a pair of Chevy Metal shows in California last month.
