This week, as students across the nation begin their college semesters, we remember the fateful day that Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio first met his musical soulmate, drummer Jon Fishman, on the UVM campus 40 years ago this week—a moment he described as “love at first sight.”
The pair would have arrived on campus for registration on August 29th, 1983, according to the school’s academic calendar, before starting their first classes on the 30th. Trey described the first time he saw his future bandmate wandering around the library after their freshman orientation in a SiriusXM interview:
I was at my first day. It was like post-orientation or something. … I’ll never forget it. … It was kind of like love at first sight.
This guy goes by with a tie-dye down to like his knees … and big huge hair and these ill-fitting Coke bottle classes and this ridiculous look on his face, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God, who is that guy?’”
And then sometime later—I don’t know if I talked to him right then—but some time later, I ended up, he was in my dorm compound, but the dorm next to mine. And I ended up knocking, it was, I think it was like the same day or maybe one day later, knocking on a door and opening it up, and there he was, and I was like, “Oh my god, it’s you, it’s that guy!” And he had his drums in his room, and I ran, I got my amp, and we started playing together.
The rest, as they say, was history.
