The Lil Smokies are featured in the latest episode of live music series The Caverns Sessions. The Montana-based string band’s five-song performance can be viewed starting today on PBS (check local listings) or below.
Now in its 12th season, The Caverns Sessions was previously titled Bluegrass Underground. The second longest-running music series on national television behind Austin City Limits consists of subterranean performances filmed underground at The Caverns in Grundy County, Tennessee.
The Lil Smokies’ set was captured back in March at The Caverns and is the fourth installment of the series’ 12th season. The band — dobroist Andy Dunnigan, fiddler Jake Simpson, guitarist Matt “Rev” Rieger, bassist Jean-Luc Goddard and banjoist Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose — opened with “The City” off their 2017 album Changing Shades.
Andy Dunnigan handled lead vocals on “The City” and the ensuing “Movies.” Both “Movies” and the Rev-helmed “Echo Park” that followed are two of the three singles The Lil Smokies released in 2022. Next came “Carry Me” from the quintet’s latest full-length LP, 2020’s Tornillo. The band closed out their The Caverns Sessions appearance with unrecorded tune “Rabbit Hole.”
