Tank and the Bangas opened a four-night residency at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club with two shows on Thursday.
With early and late shows on four consecutive nights, the New Orleans-based ensemble brought its unique blend of R&B, soul, funk, and rap to the intimate but world-renowned club, which has been a hotbed for musical experimentation and collaboration since opening in 1981—and the band brought along some special guests of their own.
J. Ivy and Chantae Cann joined the group on Thursday and Friday, with Rapsody providing support for Saturday’s shows. Rapsoday returns tonight along with Amber Navran for the residency’s finale.

Tank and the Bangas will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Think Tank, at Tipitina’s in the band’s hometown of New Orleans on December 9th. Released two years after the group first met at the Liberation Lounge open mic at the now-closed Blackstar Cafe and Books in the Algiers section of New Orleans. The band went on to gain widespread acclaim after winning the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, earning a nomination in the Best New Artist category for the 2020 Grammy Awards. They released their third studio album, Red Balloon in 2022, following 2019’s Green Balloon.
