A weekly dance party in Portland, OR that started with just a few friends and quickly grew into a vibrant community will need to obtain a festival permit in order to continue.

Mount Tabor Dance Community began during COVID lockdowns when some friends who were sick of quarantine decided to meet up and get their groove on while social distancing at Portland’s Mount Tabor Park.

“They brought a speaker and a playlist, and drew chalk circles to dance in so they could stay safely apart but still be together,” organizers explained in a social media post detailing the spontaneous dance party’s origins. “Every Wednesday at sunset they gathered on the mountain to dance. Soon people joined them…then more people…and more…”

Now, Mount Tabor Dance Community has grown to the point that in order to continue holding dance events at the public park—which, somewhat ironically, is the nation’s first designated “Urban Quiet Park” due to its low levels of noise—must obtain a festival permit and abide by the city’s guidelines for large gatherings.

Organizers have launched a GoFundMe with the goal of raising $10,000 to fund this year’s Mount Tabor Dance parties. 80% of those funds are just to cover the legally required porta potties, while the rest will go to the permit fees and insurance.
