This weekend, Dave Brandwein, the musician best known for his work as the co-founder and frontman of funk outfit Turkuaz, will take the stage at Los Angeles, CA’s The Venice West to play his first live show since his former band’s unceremonious implosion in late 2021.

Billed as the debut performance by his solo project Band For Sale—which released its first album, Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon, in 2022—the show will feature Brandwein (lead vocals, electric guitar) performing alongside Andrew Burri (vocals/acoustic guitar, formerly Lucius), Kellen Harrison (bass, Wild Belle), Casey Stikker (electric guitar), Jonathan Smith (drums), and former Turkuaz member Danke (keys, vocals). The night will also include support from Wolftrap, vinyl interludes courtesy of J Earl, and an after-show solo performance by Danke. Tickets for the show are on sale here.

As Brandwein explained to Live For Live Music about his journey back to the stage, “When Turkuaz came to a sudden and explosive end in late 2021 I was left with a lot of choices. One of the biggest choices of all was, ‘Do I want to perform and release music anymore?’ I didn’t know. I was burnt out and facing massive change in my life in almost every way imaginable.”

“But what I did know,” he continued, “was that I’d been working on a record on and off for the previous 10 years that I never had time to finish. It was the type of music I grew up listening to and playing. So in 2022 I decided to release it, just to know that it was out in the world. It felt like a band to me because I worked with so many great musicians on it. I was honestly a little bit bitter and angry, and for a few different reasons I decided to call it Band For Sale. Most importantly because I just love the name.”

“Since then I’ve been through a lot. Too much to explain, really. But earlier this year I decided that with more songs in the pipeline, I’d continue to make Band For Sale records. I also decided that it would be good to get back on stage for the first time in well over two years. I assembled a band of close friends and great musicians and it was decided it would be really nice to do it close to where I live on the west side of L.A. at The Venice West. It’s a great venue and it just seemed like the right fit.”

“I’m honestly happy to be starting pretty small again and building this thing from the ground up. It’s not the only thing I’m doing (scoring film, producing and mixing other artists, composing for music and sample libraries, other side projects, etc.), but I’m letting it be a main focus right now and enjoying the process of ‘starting a band.’”

In advance of the show, Dave Brandwein has released a new Band For Sale single, “Photograph (Parts 1 & 2)”, on streaming services. The new offering’s extended intro, the mostly instrumental “Photograph, Pt. 1”, sets an indie singer-songwriter vibe with wistful, “Dear Prudence”-like acoustic guitar and dreamy, enveloping layers of oohs and aahs. “Photograph, Pt. 2” slides in smoothly from there, serving as the meat of the song as Brandwein’s pensive lyrics on looking at the past but making new memories for the future find their way into the mix.
