Phish shared professionally-shot video of the 20+ minute “Ghost” played on this date in 2017 at the penultimate concert of the band’s Baker’s Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The theme for the night was “Boston Cream” and the show included “Sunshine Of Your Feeling,” a mashup of multiple Cream and Boston songs.
The idea for a Baker’s Dozen residency was first made public by keyboardist Page McConnell in a 2007 interview with Relix. “The band imagined giving away free donuts and even basing the theme for each show around that night’s variety,” Andy Bernstein and Lockhart Steele wrote in the Relix feature. “For ‘Boston Cream,’ a setlist might have included covers of songs by Boston and Cream.” With that in mind, fans were waiting patiently for the announcement of “Boston Cream” night once the ran began. It took until the 12th show of the 13-concert run for the band to come through.
While “Sunshine Of Your Feeling” sent the capacity crowd into hysterics, it was the “Ghost” from August 5, 2017 that contained the best jamming of the night. Here’s how Andy Kahn described the marvelous “Ghost” that kicked off the evening’s second set in the JamBase recap of the concert:
The funky opener quickly saw the foursome set out on a blissful improvisation with Trey initially sitting back playing rhythm while Page added layers of electric piano and Mike and Fish settled into a buttery groove. The jam pivoted as Anastasio came to the forefront, steering the group with rhythmic strumming on the the way to a hugely energetic peak that enlivened the frenzied audience draped under Chris Kuroda’s kaleidoscopic lights.
