Love was in the air during Greensky Bluegrass‘ opening day set at the 2021 edition of Suwannee Hulaween. After a sad year of uncertainty, the Spirit of the Suwannee was once again filled to the brim with smiling faces, colorful costumes, and the heartfelt embraces of reunited tribes. Oh… and the soaring music of bands like Greensky filled the beloved amphitheater air once again.
Dobro guitarist Anders Beck put it best when he took a moment to acknowledge the uproarious cheers that were greeting seemingly each and every moment. The circuit of love between band and audience was electrifying and his simple reaction, “We missed you too”, said it all. Alongside his bandmates, Dave Bruzza on guitar, Michael Devol on bass, Paul Hoffman on mandolin, and Michael Bont on banjo, Greensky wasted no time taking the rapt audience on a masterful musical journey.

Their setlist was laid out with a series of highs and lows though, as Beck at one point noted, lists and rules are made to be broken. They even gave the audience a taste of the new album they wrote and recorded during the time off, which we are gonna let them hold back until it’s ready. Our own Rex Thomson, AKA Rex-A-Vision, was on hand to film the madness and has three ten-minute-plus jams for us all to enjoy from last night’s show.
From a stellar one-two punch of the John Hartford classic “Steam Powered Aereo Plane” into their own mournful “Windshield” to the exploratory jams of true Greensky Bluegrass classics, “All Four” and “Don’t Lie,” there was plenty of long stretches of musical bliss and rage to vibe with.
We’re going to have tons of coverage from Hulaween but for now, check out the day one Greensky Bluegrass fun in the clips below.
