Paste Magazine hosted Yonder Mountain String Band at The Steamboat Grand in Colorado on Sunday afternoon as part of the Paste Studio on the Road video series. The performance came amid WinterWonderGrass Colorado, which took place at Steamboat Resort in Steamboat Springs, CO on February 25th–27th.
This Sunday afternoon appearance on Paste Studio on the Road followed the band’s Grass After Dark performance on Saturday night at the Thunderhead Lodge and preceded its headlining set on the festival’s main stage on Sunday. For the Paste Studio live audience, YMSB delivered three songs, each from its newest album, Get Yourself Outside, which arrived on February 25th via Frog Pad Records.
Get Yourself Outside marked the first album with recently-added multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininni, who took over lead vocals and mandolin duties on the first offering, “Into the Fire”. Guitarist Adam Aijala picked some sprawling lead lines before each member took a solo of their own. Up next was “Change of Heart”, sung by the group’s second newest member, Allie Kral, who also interjected some melodies on her fiddle as bassist Ben Kaufmann and banjoist Dave Johnston laid the musical foundation. Finally, the band closed with “I Just Can’t”, which featured lead vocal work from Aijala and superb harmonies from Piccininni.
