The Grateful Dead kicked off a three-night run at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on July 13, 1984. The Friday the 13th show was a lucky one for fans as the Dead busted out “Dark Star” to cap the concert, marking the psychedelic classic’s second and final apperance in an encore.
The show got off to a conventional start with “Bertha,” which GD paired with “Greatest Story Ever Told.” Save for “Hell In A Bucket” and the traditional “C.C. Rider,” which was only performed in the 1970s twice, the rest of the first frame harkened back to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s with performances of “Dire Wolf,” “Loser,” “Cassidy” and “Dupree’s Diamond Blues.” “Hell In A Bucket,” which debuted just a year earlier, then led into “Might As Well” to conclude the first set.
It was in the second set when the band started to color outside the lines. While they had just unveiled the trio of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Touch Of Grey” > “Fire On The Mountain” ten days earlier in Kansas City, the backyard Bay Area show at the Greek marked the end of the “Scarlet” > “Touch” > “Fire” experiment. As always, the band continued to experiment, coupling “Scarlet” and “Touch” into 1986.
A song that often appeared in or around said experimentations was “Man Smart (Woman Smarter),” which followed “Scarlet” > “Touch” > “Fire” at the Greek on Friday the 13th. “Drums” and “Space” came next before the band kept going through “The Wheel,” “I Need A Miracle,” “Stella Blue” and “Sugar Magnolia” to seal the second set.”
The Grateful Dead returned for a unique “Dark Star” encore. Not only was it the only time the favorite appeared by itself in an encore in the band’s 30 year tenure, GD had not played the song since New Year’s Eve 1981 (167 show gap) just down the road at the Oakland Civic Auditorium — which marked the first time the song appeared in an encore. On Friday the 13th at the Greek, the audience went nuts when the Dead broke out the beloved tune and the band made what would become the final “Dark Star” encore a doozy, traversing varied sonic terrain over the course of 17 minutes.”
